The Department of Microbiology of Bankura Sammilani College was established in 2002 under the University of Burdwan with the noble vision of promoting applied science and smart learning facilities among the students of Bankura and neighboring regions. It has now received wide recognition as a premier organization both in respect to teaching and research. At present, the Department enrolls sixty Hons. Graduate students each year under UGC approved CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) curriculum of Bankura University.
The Department has a well-equipped laboratory with advanced scientific instruments, ICT enabled classrooms, and LAF chamber. The Departmental library is encased with a wide range of reference books (39) and Science magazines for subjective and CSIR-UGC examinations. Students can also access e-journals and e-books in the Department. The central library of our college has specified section for Microbiology division and has 854 reference books. The Department is engaged in imparting theoretical, practical, and research training to the students. The very new approach of engaging students in scheduled project work has widened a broad range of gateway to the learners. The Department also provides ‘hands-on training’ on Aquaculture and Vermi-composting. The Department will soon open a museum of wild variety of mushrooms of neighboring forest areas.
The Department makes every possible effort to impart valued teaching and guidance to students. Faculties hold membership of several professional bodies like Association of Microbiologist of India (AMI), Biotech Research Society, India (BRSI). They are actively involved in research activities and publish articles in internationally and nationally reputed journals. Department has, over the years, produced quality students, who occupy important positions in educational and research institutions in the country and abroad.
The Department has a legacy of arranging educational tours, science exhibitions, field trips, awareness camps, seminars and outreach activities. This department always nourishes students, not only in academics but also in cultural and creative activities. The prime objective of this department is to confer cognitive development of the students in an encouraging research oriented environment.
